About the Pansy Shell

The pansy shell serves as the emblem of Plettenberg Bay, and is a white disc shaped shell with a beautiful flower carved on it's back - making it a fine shell collector specimen. The pansy shell is really the sun bleached shell of a borrowing urchin - some species elsewhere in the world are called Sand Dollars or Sea Cookies.
The pansy shell is particularly popular because it is such a rare find along the Garden Route - the only place in the world where these shells occur. Nothing seems to be as thrilling as discovering an undamaged pansy shell yourself, making a visit to the charming Plettenberg Bay complete.
Go for a walk on the beach early morning, or at sunset, and see what surprises Mother Nature may have saved for you...
